Exlusive Interview: DJ Double M
Double M is a Finnish Hip Hop/Dancehall DJ who was gettin his buzz on in the Finnish club-scene last year before he moved to the Bay-Area.
Now he's back in Finland, so we sat down to talk about what's going on with the man with the masterplan.
Riqzilla: What's good, Double M?
Double M: I'm good. I was studyin last fall in the Bay-Area near Oakland, feels good to be back in Finland.
Riqzilla: Cool. What was your first impression of the Bay-Area?
Double M: I liked San Fran, it's a dope city. I was spendin alot of time in Haight-Asbury and Lower Haight since I went to the Bay. Oakland is a dangerous place, not a good idea to hit the streets after the sun sets.
Riqzilla: The Bay-Area is known for it's Hyphy-scene. Tell us about the local radiostations, do other than Hyphy-artists receive love in the Bay?
Double M: Hahah, well yeah. I was pretty much listenin to No Wild 94.9 and 106Kmel. E-40, Keak Da Sneak and Too $hort was on heavy rotation. T.I.'s "Whatever You Like" and Lil' Wayne's "Lollipop" were the biggest hits last fall. Before I left, "Pop Champagne" by Ron Brownz & Jim Jones got alot of spins, also T-Pain's "Can't Believe It" and the joint Akon did with E-40 got spins atleast once an hour.
Riqzilla: What about upcomin artists, how do they get their buzz on?
Double M: They be sellin mixtapes infront of clubs and recordshops.
Riqzilla: You were playin alot of shows in Finland before you left, so what's the situation now that you're back?
Double M: Things are lookin good. I'll be playin this January in Club Diamond, Helsinki, after that I'm goin to be playin at Sikamaanantai, Redrum and you can catch me also in the Realest Ting-party at Pikku-Torre, Turku with the legendary DJ Kelloggs and the most talented DJ Resupekka. There's goin to be a couple of big parties in February but I'll reveal more on that later.
Riqzilla: I can see you got alot goin on, good for you. Are you workin on any new projects at the moment?
Double M: There's goin to be Climate Change Vol.2 with Riq Alpha, we're workin on that one and I got alot of ideas goin on and I'm thinkin about puttin out a mixtape with only remixes on it...I might add a couple of my own remixes to it.
Riqzilla: Sounds dope. Some say that you use the kind of songs on your mixtapes that no other DJ's want to touch. Do you believe the hype or do you just follow your instincts?
Double M: The joints that end up on my mixtapes are my favourite songs, it's hard to say how "the hype" effects my own personal taste but I always follow my own instincts.
Riqzilla: Is there any certain artist you would like to work with at the moment?
Double M: Well you see, I don't produce beats and usually I do my mixtapes all by myself, but it would be nice to go and pull a show with my friends DJ Ink and DJ Luoma!
Riqzilla: What are your plans for the year 2009?
Double M: I'm really bad in plannin anything, LOL. I hope I can do as much shows with my friends as possible. I'm headin to Germany and Holland next summer and I should be workin on my finals next fall, so I guess that's alot of plannin for a lazy dude like me, LOL.
Riqzilla: Hahah. Top 5 songs at the moment?
Double M:
1. Jay Z: Brooklyn We Go Hard
2. Matterhorn: When It Rains
3. E-40: The Ambassdor
4. Elephant Man: Big, Bad and Bald
5. Busy Signal: My World
Riqzilla: Any last words?
Double M: Happy new year for all the readers on Riqzilla's Blog!
Come to our shows and learn the lyrics of all the songs so yall can sing along in the club, LOL!
Peace!
